OK, so I love a culinary challenge and am happy (on occasion) to cook for friends with food fads. However, I have an interesting one in a new friend who is allergic to onion. I thought that wasn't to big a deal, until I realised quite how much of what I cook contains onion. Onion is not normally a big part of most meals, but it is vital to flavour and not easily substituted.

So, what would you recommend?

My husband's cousin said that he hated onions so I would use extra green peppers instead. Here is something I found online that you may find helpful (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-can-i-use-as-a-substitute-for-onions.htm):

One common substitute for onions is a nice bunch of leeks. Leeks have a milder taste than onions and are far less acidic. Many people who cannot eat onions can consume leeks with no problem. You can use the green tops as well as the white bulbs for a little added color to the dish. When leeks are still a problem, you may want to look into such options as fried cumin seeds and perhaps asafetida, better known as hing. Both will add flavor to many recipes and are very friendly to constitutions that cannot handle onions for some reason. Hot peppers may also serve as a viable substitute for onions as well. Mince the peppers so the taste will be evenly distributed throughout the prepared recipe.

you get my vote for mentioning asafoetida. You have to be careful with this one - the "foetid" bit is the clue ... – klypos Mar 9 at 23:44

I like the leek suggestion especially for texture even if it's not as strong. I would probably also (depending on the recipe) add/substitute in garlic. I feel it's a strong tasty flavor.

In contrast to your issue, I have run out of garlic occasionally and I add extra onion and it seems to work out well, so I would think the opposite may work well too.

Leeks, garlic ... they are all the same (allium) family of plants.

Only one substitute is likely to work - asafoetida, and that might be risky - it is still the same family, but it is incredibly powerful, so using a little asafoetida salt could be possible.

It could be a step in the wrong direction, but it could work.

Either way, you need to find out.
