Is there a reasonable substitute for lemongrass?

Lime juice perhaps?

While you can't exactly replicate the texture and flavor of lemongrass, the combination of lemon zest, ginger, and cilantro stalks do a good job of getting a flavor that will work in place of lemongrass.

Thanks! I realize it cannot be replicated, but there had to be something to give a similar kick. I'll try that. – paulbeckingham Dec 10 at 0:27
No problem. Just did this substitution a few days ago and it worked well in thai soup. – Kris Dec 10 at 0:47

It is a stupid academic answer that I provide, more of a comment -

but in the West many recipes use lemon grass because of the restricted availability of Kaffir Limes. LOL in UK we can get Kaffir Lime LEAVES, but not the fruit!

@klypos, you can get Kaffir limes in the UK if you grow your own: amazon.co.uk/s/… – Rich Seller Dec 10 at 14:40
I'm not very successful with things like that. Especially as citrus plants do not tolerate alkaline soil and hard water, which is all we have in these parts. I've already killed a couple of lemon plants finding that out ... – klypos Dec 10 at 18:06
