As a UK person, I ask the US people for help.

I just spent 10 days in NJ. I am a diabetic "vegetarian of convenience" (when I don't like the available choices, I am vegetarian!), and I have to watch my cholesterol levels.

One day, I tried grits for breakfast. I am Scottish, so I am used to the taste of salted porage (which is very uninteresting to start with). Grits makes porage taste mouthwatering and delicious, as the Indians would say. On the other hand, it is a healthy breakfast.

In a hotel, I can only use the available resources. Short of tipping in the contents of 12 sachets of "Sweet n Low", is there anything sugarless that will make grits interesting?

Hey, I like savory flavors, and I am used to the strange looks of waiters when I eat French toast with pepper and a little ketchup! Tell me your best ideas ... I have to go back soon.

Most hotels have butter pats available that you can get usually for free upon request. The other thing available to you is salt. The standard way around where I live to eat grits is the use of a lot of butter and some salt. Supposedly it is delicious that way (I wouldn't know as I don't like grits but my hubby swears by it). Give that a try----made this way I think you could even add some of that pepper you like :-)

It will not help with my cholesterol, but I'll give it a try - thanks – Patricia Nov 27 at 13:38

I like cheese mixed into my grits. Maybe you can ask for a slice of cheese. Simply shred it and stir it into hot grits. American or cheddar would probably be traditional. Jack is also good in my opinion.

Hotels also have hot sauce. Give it a try on your grits sometime. You can slo ask for little single serving jelly containers and stir some in.
