I can't eat red meat anymore, so I'm looking for some substitutes that are close to the real thing. Mainly a substitute for beef, for hamburgers, tacos, etc.

The market is full of meat substitutes to red meat. My personal favorite is ground turkey or ground chicken, but it does have a different taste. Premade vegetable burgers are close to the real thing as are some of the ground seafood substitutes. The best of the seafood substitutes are made from salmon, swordfish, and tuna. I would also encourage you to visit the section of the supermarket where they sell premade vegetarian dishes. While these may not always taste the best, it is a good place to start as far as ideas and recipes go.

Yes, I agree with the ground turkey. I think it's a great substitute for ground beef. With seasoning there is not a major difference in texture/taste and most people (except my husband) don't mind the substitute. Although I totally don't agree that premade veggie burgers are "close to the real thing" as Brandon suggested. I do like them and they have a lot of flavor, but they do not taste anything like a real burger (to me or anyone in my family). – Sabrina Nov 21 at 22:08

Here's a run down of some of my favorite "fake meats".

Gardein bbq pulled shreds: They make AMAZING bbq sandwiches. Just add some sliced pickle.

Quorn Gruyere Chik'n Cutlet: 2 pieces per box, just add veggies or fries.

Field Roast celebration roast: Perfect for the holidays or just plain old sunday dinner.

Morningstar riblets: The best fake ribs I've found so far. Just pop them in the microwave for a couple of minutes and your good to go.

Lightlife Smart Ground Mexican "beef": FAT FREE but with all the savory taste of juicy ground beef. Ready to use crumbles for tacos, nachos, burritos, stuffed peppers, and much more.

hope this helped!

I would say maybe a tune will be good substitute. I really like the taste of it. It is still kind of a meat, but it is different, and depends on the tuna for the kind of the taste. Hopefully it will help.

There is a slight misspelling that made me laugh when I thought that you were going to suggest a song for her. hehe Can you edit tune to tuna? :) – Sabrina Nov 21 at 22:04

My favorite meat substitute for ground beef is Morning Stars crumbles. I've made them in tacos, chili and pasta sauce, and the only real difference is the texture - these are slightly softer. Otherwise the taste is nearly the same. We actually prefer the crumbles over regular ground beef. They come in 12oz. bags, which are perfect for making a meal for a few people - I have always found that in recipes calling for 1lb. of ground beef it is usually too much meat. Hope that helps!

For tacos and some other ground beef uses, I've found that using beans and spicing them as you would meat is a delicious and healthier way to eat.

Tofu is my favorite meat substitute, and is super healthy for you. It also absorbs flavors very easily, so you can season or marinate it with whatever flavorings you would use on your red meat. It is quite affordable and can be used in 100s of ways!

For burgers and tacos, I would use a combination of ground turkey and chicken.

For the vegetarian, vegetables and fruits are the best substitute for meat. Also, in Africa the use of mushroom founds in decayed stem of trees and palm trees are really good substitute for meat

There are some good meat replacement foods you can get at some grocery stores. I won't fool you and tell you that they taste just as good as meat. When seasoned just right they really do taste pretty good. Some brands to look for a Morning Star, and Boca Burger.

I definitely suggest turkey as a great alternative to red meat. It's a lot healthier and usually cheaper than beef. One of my favorite alternatives is turkey franks I love the way they taste and it has less fat than hot dogs.
