What can I substitute for red wine in a recipe that calls for it as part of the sauce? I need a non alcoholic substitution.

You can substitute by using the same measurement for the wine with any following: apple cider, cranberry juice, red grape juice, flavored red wine vinegar or you can purchase a bottle of alcohol-free red wine. Also, the alcohol will cook out of regular red wine especially if you are making a sauce that is going to simmer for 20 minutes or so.

it is important to keep the volume of liquid in the recipe the same as originally called for when making substitutions for red wine. chicken broth and flavored liqueurs often make good substitutions
